# Body Doubling: What It Is and How to Try It

> Body doubling means working alongside someone else so starting and staying on task feels easier. What it is, the different types, and how to try it this week.

You've had the same form on your desk for a week. Then a friend comes round, sits on the sofa scrolling their phone, and you fill the form in within ten minutes.

They didn't help. They were just there.

That's body doubling, and it's one of the simplest focus tricks people with ADHD use.

## What body doubling is

Body doubling means doing a task while another person is present. They don't help with the task, and they might be doing something completely different. Their presence is the point.

It's an informal technique, popular in ADHD communities, rather than a clinical treatment. Plenty of people without ADHD use it too, often without a name for it: studying in a library, working in a café, or folding laundry while on the phone to a parent.

## Why it seems to help

There's not a lot of formal research on body doubling specifically, so treat these as common explanations rather than settled science:

- **Gentle accountability.** You said you'd work, and someone can see whether you are.
- **A cue to start.** Sitting down together creates a clear start time.
- **Less drift.** It's harder to wander off to the fridge when someone else is still working.
- **Calm company.** For some people, another person nearby makes a boring or stressful task feel less heavy.

If it works for you, you don't need to know exactly why.

## Types of body doubling

### In person

A friend, partner or housemate in the same room. They can work on their own thing, read or just be there. This is the strongest version for many people, but it depends on someone being free.

### Shared public spaces

Libraries, cafés and coworking spaces. You're surrounded by people working, which provides a light version of the same effect. No one needs to know what you're doing.

### Video or voice calls

Two people on a call, mostly silent, each working. You check in at the start and end. Cameras on or off is up to you.

### Virtual coworking sessions

Online sessions where strangers join to work together, usually with a short check-in about what everyone plans to do. They're useful when no one you know is free.

### "Work with me" videos

Recordings or livestreams of someone studying, cleaning or working. It's the lightest version, since there's no accountability, but some people find the presence alone helps.

### Check-in texts

The asynchronous version: you message someone when you start and again when you finish. No one watches, but you've told someone, and that can be enough.

## How to try it this week

### Step 1: Pick one avoided task

Choose something you've been putting off that takes under two hours. Admin tasks, emails, decluttering a cupboard and study sessions all work well.

### Step 2: Choose a type

Start with whatever is easiest to set up. If a friend is around, ask them. If not, try a library or a check-in text.

### Step 3: Set a start and an end

"Two to three on Saturday" works better than "some time on Saturday". A clear end makes the session feel manageable.

### Step 4: Say your goal out loud

At the start, tell your body double what you're going to do. Be specific: "I'm filling in the council tax form and posting it" rather than "admin".

### Step 5: Work, with minimal chat

Keep talking for the breaks. If you get stuck, it's fine to say so, but try to return to the task quickly.

### Step 6: Report back

At the end, say what you got done. This small moment of reporting back adds a lot of the accountability.

## How to ask a friend to body double

Asking can feel awkward. A few tips:

- **Be clear about what you need.** "Could you just sit with me on a call while I do my emails? You don't need to do anything."
- **Offer to return the favour.** Many people have a task they're avoiding too.
- **Keep it short at first.** An hour is an easy yes; a whole afternoon is harder.
- **Make it regular if it works.** A standing Tuesday evening session is easier than arranging one each time.

Example message to send:

"Hey Mia, would you be up for a quiet video call Thursday 7 to 8? I need to get my tax stuff done and I work better with someone there. Happy to do the same for you."

## Making it a habit

One session is a nice trick. A regular one changes your week.

- **Same time, same person** if you can.
- **A reminder before each session** so it doesn't slip.
- **A list of avoided tasks** ready to bring, so you're never sitting down without something to do.

## How to do this with Mindie

Mindie can't be your body double. It lives in WhatsApp and only messages you. But it can handle the parts around a session that tend to slip.

Remind yourself to set up the session:

- "Tomorrow at 10am remind me to text Mia about a body doubling call on Thursday"

When the reminder arrives, Mindie can hand you a ready WhatsApp link with the message, so you tap and send it yourself.

Keep a list of avoided tasks to bring:

- "Add 'sort the hall cupboard' to my body doubling list"
- "Show my body doubling list"

Set a regular session reminder:

- "Every Tuesday at 6:45pm remind me the body doubling call with Ben starts at 7"

Use a check-in reminder when you're working alone:

- "Remind me in 45 minutes to check if I finished the tax form"

Reply "done" when you finish. The [ADHD page](/for/adhd) covers more ways people use Mindie to get started on hard days.

## FAQ

### Does body doubling work for people without ADHD?

Many people without ADHD use it, often without calling it that, for example by studying in a library or working in a café. It tends to help anyone who finds it easier to focus with others around.

### Can you body double online?

Yes. Video calls, voice calls, virtual coworking sessions and even pre-recorded "work with me" videos are common ways to body double without being in the same room.

### What should a body double do?

Usually nothing specific. They can work on their own task, read or just be present. Agreeing on a start and end time, and checking in briefly at both, is enough.
