# Moving Checklist: A Week-by-Week Plan From Notice to Unpacking

> A moving checklist that works backwards from moving day: lease notice, utilities, internet, address changes and the jobs still left once you've moved in.

Moving day is booked. Everything else is a vague cloud of things you'll "sort out nearer the time".

Then it's three days away, the internet company needs two weeks' notice, and nobody has told the bank.

A move is dozens of small deadlines stacked into a few weeks. Each one is easy on its own. The trouble is they all have different lead times, so the only way to stay ahead is to work backwards from the date and give each job its own reminder.

## Start with the dates you can't move

Before any packing, write down the fixed dates. Everything else gets planned around these.

- **Moving day** itself
- **Your lease notice deadline,** if you're renting now. Many leases need written notice weeks or months before you leave, and missing it can mean paying an extra month's rent.
- **The start date** at the new place, and when you get the keys
- **Any deposit or final payment dates**

If you rent, check the lease for the exact notice period and how notice has to be given. The [lease renewal reminder](/reminders/lease-renewal) page shows how to set a heads-up before the notice date, which is the date that catches most people out.

## 8 weeks before

This is the planning stage. Nothing needs packing yet, but the long-lead jobs start now.

- **Give notice on your current place** if you rent, in writing.
- **Book movers or a van.** Good movers fill up fast at the end of the month and in summer.
- **Start a moving folder or list** for quotes, contracts and confirmation numbers.
- **Declutter one room a week.** Sell, donate or bin what you won't take. Less stuff means a cheaper move.
- **Check school transfers** if you have kids. School places can take weeks to sort.

## 4 to 6 weeks before

Now the service changes start, because several need notice.

- **Book internet at the new address.** Installation can take weeks in some areas, and you don't want to spend your first fortnight on phone data. While you're at it, check whether your current contract has an exit fee or a minimum term. The [internet bill reminder](/reminders/internet-bill) page also covers a heads-up before a deal ends.
- **Arrange gas, electricity and water.** Tell your current suppliers your move-out date and set up the new address.
- **Order packing boxes and tape.**
- **Book time off work** for moving day, and ideally the day after.
- **Sort out mail redirection** with your postal service so post follows you for a few months.

## 2 to 3 weeks before

- **Start packing the rooms you use least:** spare room, books, out-of-season clothes, garage.
- **Label every box** with the room it goes to and a rough list of what's inside.
- **Arrange childcare or pet care** for moving day.
- **Use up the freezer and pantry** so there's less to move.
- **Confirm the movers** and give them the new address, access details and parking info.

## Moving week

- **Pack a first-night box.** Kettle, mugs, phone chargers, toilet roll, towels, bedding, basic tools, medication, snacks and a change of clothes.
- **Take meter readings and photos** at the old place on the day you leave.
- **Do a final clean** and photograph each room, especially if you rent. These photos can help if there's a question about your deposit.
- **Hand back keys** and get a written confirmation.
- **Take meter readings at the new place** as soon as you arrive.

## After you move: the address change list

This is the part that drags on for months. You'll keep finding accounts with your old address. Work through the list in the first two weeks:

- **Driver's licence and vehicle registration.** Some places require you to update your address within a set number of days. Check your local licensing office for the rules. The [driver's license renewal reminder](/reminders/drivers-license-renewal) page also covers address changes.
- **Bank, credit cards and loans**
- **Employer and payroll**
- **Doctor, dentist and vet** (and register with new ones if you've moved area)
- **Insurance:** home, contents, car, health, life
- **Tax authority and voter registration**
- **Online shopping accounts,** so the next parcel doesn't go to the old place
- **Subscriptions and memberships**

A good trick: keep a list called "address changes" and add to it every time a letter arrives at the old address, or a website still shows the old one.

## How to set it up with Mindie

The trick with a move is getting each deadline out of your head and onto a reminder the moment you know it. With Mindie, you can do that in WhatsApp in a sentence or a voice note.

Work backwards from moving day:

- "Moving day is 28 November. Remind me 6 weeks before to book the internet installation"
- "Remind me on 1 October to give written notice on the flat"
- "Remind me before the lease notice deadline on 30 September, give me a heads-up 2 weeks before"

Keep your lists in the same chat:

- "Save a list called address changes: bank, credit card, payroll, car insurance, dentist, vet"
- "Add mobile phone provider to my address changes list"

Ask for the list any time ("show me my address changes list") and tick items off as you go. For the jobs with a fixed deadline, like the licence update, nag mode keeps nudging until you mark it done.

If the moving company sends a confirmation email, send Mindie a screenshot and turn the date in it into a reminder.

## Make moving day easier on yourself

- **Write down every confirmation number** in one place: movers, utilities, internet, key handover.
- **Keep valuables and documents with you,** not on the van.
- **Charge your phone the night before.** It's your map, your contact list and your torch.
- **Order takeaway for the first night.** Nobody wants to unpack pans on day one.

If a move leaves your head full of half-remembered tasks, the post on [how to stop forgetting things](/blog/how-to-stop-forgetting-things) has a simple capture system. And once you're in, the [home maintenance checklist](/blog/home-maintenance-checklist) helps you set up the new place's filters and alarms from day one.

## Reminders worth setting

- [Lease renewal reminder](/reminders/lease-renewal): A heads-up before your lease notice deadline, so you decide in time.
- [Internet bill reminder](/reminders/internet-bill): A monthly bill reminder, and an early warning before a contract ends.
- [Driver's license renewal reminder](/reminders/drivers-license-renewal): A reminder to renew or update your licence well before the deadline.
- [Pay rent reminder](/reminders/pay-rent): A monthly reminder before rent is due at the new place, so the first month starts on time.

## FAQ

### How far in advance should I start planning a move?

Six to eight weeks is a comfortable lead time for most moves. That leaves time to give notice, book movers and arrange internet, which are the jobs with the longest waits.

### Who do I need to notify when I move?

Usually your bank, employer, insurers, doctor, dentist, vehicle licensing office, tax authority, utilities, subscriptions and online shopping accounts. Keeping a running list helps, because new ones turn up for months.

### When should I set up internet at a new home?

Ideally four to six weeks before you move. Installation times vary by provider and area, and booking early gives you the best chance of being connected from the first day.
