# Schedule a WhatsApp Message: What Works (and What Doesn't)

> WhatsApp has no built-in scheduler for regular messages. Here's what it can schedule, the risks of auto-send apps, and a simple way to send on time yourself.

It's 11pm and you've just remembered your friend's birthday is tomorrow.

You want the message to land at 9am, not now. So you look for a "send later" button.

There isn't one. Here's what WhatsApp can schedule, what it can't, and the simplest way to send on time anyway.

## The short answer

WhatsApp doesn't describe a way to schedule an ordinary message in its help center or blog. You can't write a message tonight and have WhatsApp send it at 9am tomorrow from your personal chat.

What WhatsApp can schedule is narrower:

- **Calls.** From the Calls tab you can schedule a call and invite people or groups in advance. Everyone invited gets a notification when the call is about to begin.
- **Events.** In a group or one-to-one chat you can create an event with a date and time. People who answer going or maybe are notified when it starts, and in groups you can set early reminders for invitees.
- **Away messages on WhatsApp Business.** The Business app can send an automatic away message on a schedule, such as outside your business hours. It's a reply to people who message you, not a message you schedule for someone.

If you want a specific message to reach a specific person at a specific time, none of these does that job.

## What about apps that auto-send for you?

Search for "schedule WhatsApp message" and you'll find apps and browser extensions that claim to send messages for you at a set time.

Be careful with these. Some need deep access to your phone or your WhatsApp Web session to work, and some rely on automating your account in ways WhatsApp doesn't offer itself. Before installing one, check:

- **What it needs access to.** Accessibility permissions, notification access, or a logged-in WhatsApp Web session are a lot to hand over.
- **What happens to your messages.** Read its privacy policy.
- **Whether it's worth the risk to your account.** Automated sending from a personal account isn't something WhatsApp describes supporting.

For most people, the risk isn't worth it for a birthday message.

## Why "remind me to send" usually works better

Scheduled messages sound ideal, but they have quirks. A message sent automatically at 9am arrives when you might be in a meeting and can't reply when your friend answers. Plans change overnight. And a pre-written message can feel flat if it lands at an odd moment.

A reminder to send solves the timing problem and keeps you in the conversation. You get a nudge at 9am, send the message yourself, and you're there when they reply.

The trick is making the reminder fast to act on. If you have to open the chat, find the person and type the whole thing again, it's easy to put off. So write the message in advance, and attach it to the reminder.

## How to send a message on time without a scheduler

### Step 1: Write it now, while you're thinking of it

Draft the message the moment you think of it. "Happy birthday Mia! Hope today's brilliant. Drinks on me next week" takes ten seconds tonight, and it's the part you'll procrastinate on tomorrow.

### Step 2: Pick the time they'll want to read it

Birthday messages in the morning. Work follow-ups in business hours on a weekday. Anything to someone in another timezone at a time that's sensible for them.

### Step 3: Set a reminder that carries the message

Put the full message in the reminder text, so when it arrives you can copy and send in one move.

### Step 4: Use a pre-filled link for one-tap sending

A wa.me link opens a chat with a number and can include a message already typed. Our free [WhatsApp link generator](/tools/whatsapp-link-generator) makes one: enter the number with its country code, add your message, and copy the link. Save that link in your reminder, tap it when the reminder arrives, and the message is there waiting for you to press send.

## Doing it with Mindie

Mindie is a WhatsApp contact that sends reminders to you, in your timezone. It never sends messages to anyone else, but it can do the next best thing: hand you a ready-to-send WhatsApp link with your message typed, so sending takes one tap.

Some examples:

- "Remind me at 9am tomorrow to send Mia a happy birthday message: Happy birthday Mia! Hope today's brilliant"
- "Every year on 12 March at 8am remind me to message Jake for his birthday"
- "Remind me Monday at 10am to follow up with Sarah about the quote"

When the reminder arrives, tap the link if Mindie gives you one, check the message, and press send. Then reply done. If 9am turns out to be a bad time, reply "snooze 1 hour".

For messages you send on a rhythm, like a weekly check-in with your parents or a monthly note to a client, set the reminder once as a repeating one and it comes back on its own.

## When you might want a different tool

There are cases where a reminder to send isn't enough:

- **Businesses sending many messages** to customers, like appointment confirmations. That's a job for tools built on WhatsApp's business platform, with the right consent from customers.
- **Calls or meetups with a group.** Use WhatsApp's own scheduled calls or events, which notify everyone.
- **Reminders that other people get directly.** Some reminder bots can message friends or groups. Mindie only messages you.

## Reminders worth setting

- [Birthday reminder](/reminders/birthday): A reminder on the day, plus a week ahead for cards and gifts.
- [Anniversary reminder](/reminders/anniversary): An early heads-up to plan something, and a nudge on the day.
- [Call parents reminder](/reminders/call-parents): A regular reminder to call or message your parents.

## FAQ

### Can you schedule a message on WhatsApp?

Not for ordinary messages, as far as WhatsApp's own help center and blog describe. You can schedule calls from the Calls tab and create events with reminders, and the Business app can send away messages on a schedule.

### Is it safe to use apps that schedule WhatsApp messages?

Be cautious. Many need wide access to your phone or a logged-in WhatsApp Web session, and automating a personal account isn't something WhatsApp offers itself. A reminder to send the message yourself avoids those risks.

### How do I send a WhatsApp message with the text already typed?

Use a wa.me link with a pre-filled message. Enter the number with its country code and your message into a link generator, then open the link. WhatsApp opens the chat with the message ready, and you press send.

### How do I schedule a message on WhatsApp?

WhatsApp can't send an ordinary message later by itself, so you plan it around the app instead. Write the message now, set a reminder for the time you want it to go, and send it with one tap when the reminder arrives. A pre-filled wa.me link, or a tap-to-send reminder from Mindie, opens the chat with the message ready.

### Does WhatsApp have a send later or schedule send option?

Not for regular chats. Calls can be scheduled from the Calls tab, and the Business app can send away messages on a schedule, but a normal message goes out when you press send.

### Can you schedule a WhatsApp message on iPhone or Android?

Neither phone has a built-in way to do it inside WhatsApp. On both, the safest route is the same: a reminder at the right time, with the message already written and a link that opens the chat. Third-party auto-send apps exist, with the access and account risks covered above.
