Break timer
Updated .
A break timer alternates focus time with short breaks: the 20-20-20 rule for your eyes, the classic 25/5 pomodoro, or 50/10 for longer deep work. Pick a mode, press Start, and keep the tab open. The countdown shows in the tab title, and a chime marks each switch.
Focus
20:00
Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
Which mode to use
- 20-20-20, for long screen days. Every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
- Pomodoro, for tasks you're putting off. 25 minutes feels short enough to start.
- 50 / 10, for deep work that needs a longer run before a proper break.
Making breaks stick
- Leave the desk on longer breaks. A short walk does more than a phone scroll.
- Drink water at each break. See drink water reminders.
- Stop at the chime, even mid-sentence. Finishing the thought on return makes starting again easier.
Breaks away from the browser
This timer only runs while the tab is open. For breaks that reach you anywhere, Mindie can send WhatsApp reminders through the day: "every day at 11am, 3pm and 5pm remind me to stand up and stretch". See stretch break reminders. Every feature is free for 7 days.
Questions
What is the 20-20-20 rule?
Every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet (6 metres) away for 20 seconds. It's a common way to give your eyes a rest during screen work.
Does the timer keep running in a background tab?
Yes. It counts against the clock, so it stays accurate even when the tab is in the background, and the countdown shows in the tab title.
Will I get a notification?
If you allow notifications when you press Start, you'll get one at each switch. Otherwise there's a soft chime and the title changes.
Is this medical advice?
No. If you have eye strain or pain, see an optician or doctor.
This tool runs in your browser: nothing you type is sent to Mindie or saved. Checked on 29 October 2026.
