Cost of forgetting calculator

Updated .

The cost of forgetting is the money you lose only because something wasn't done on time: a late fee, a subscription you meant to cancel, a no-show charge, a refund window that closed. Enter how often each happens in a year and what it costs, and the calculator adds it up.

Finding your real numbers

Your bank and card statements are the honest source. Search the last twelve months for:

  • Late fees and interest on cards, loans and utility bills.
  • Renewals and free trials that turned into charges you didn't want.
  • No-show or late-cancellation fees from doctors, salons, gyms or restaurants.
  • Returns you didn't make in time, or refunds you never claimed.
  • Fines and penalties for expired documents or late filings.

Most people find a few small charges they had forgotten about, which is the point.

Why small costs add up

Each one is small enough to shrug off. A late fee here, an unwanted renewal there. But they're rarely one-offs: the bill that's late once is often late again, and every subscription with a free trial is another chance to be charged.

Cutting the number

Almost every item on the list is solved by a reminder a few days before the date. That's what Mindie does: text it "remind me on the 12th that the free trial ends on the 15th" or send a screenshot of a bill, and it messages you on WhatsApp in time. It's free for 7 days, then $90 a year on the yearly plan. If the calculator shows less than that, you may not need a reminder app for money alone, and that's fine to know.

Questions

Where do the starting numbers come from?

They're small placeholders, not averages. Replace them with your own: check your last year of bank statements for late fees and charges you didn't mean to pay.

What counts as a cost of forgetting?

Money lost only because something wasn't done on time: late fees, interest, renewals you meant to cancel, no-show fees, missed refund windows, fines for expired documents.

Is anything I type saved?

No. The calculator runs in your browser and nothing is sent to Mindie.

Is this financial advice?

No. It's simple arithmetic on numbers you enter.

This tool runs in your browser: nothing you type is sent to Mindie or saved. Checked on 29 October 2026.
